There is a new issue that the ports will close down if another switchis plugged in to it. I have a Cisco switch that I have to deal with - I have no control over it's configuration and at my facility, there isn't even anyone to ask ( a long story ). You need to find the best fit for your org. I've used it on the server side for almost 5 years, and will not go back to individual servers. This new virtual desktop technology is really cool.
Rolling out applications to your site is easy too, you install it once on the virtual desktop host computer and all clients have access to it (not sure about licensing here).Īs you see it is not a clear picture to do or not to do. You can lock down this configuration so users can "accidentally" change important system settings. You will also reduce the amount of cooling needed for your office (have you ever felt the air discharge of your computer?). But it will be less than a traditional desktop. because you still have a "mini" computer at the work site. You have (should) reduce your power consumption.
You only have one system to patch and protect. Granted you have a small site and if you are running GB speeds you shouldn't see much of a difference. Or do they just take a really long cable? How good is your network, you will put an extra load on it when you separate the CPU from the screen. What will you do about mobile users? They need to take their computing horsepower with them. An additional $100 USD and you just purchased a really cheap desktop. So you will still need to spend this money for the user's work site (you could just use an older computer for this too, but then you will not benefit from energy reduction). The last time I check the Wise thin clients were running about $280 USD. Even if you setup a bullet proof server that is lightning fast, what are you going to do at the user work site? The user still needs a screen and keyboard and some kind of local processor to convert the RDP signals into pictures on the monitor. Remember you still have to purchase the multipoint server licenses. How much will that cost, I would bet it would surpass your $4800 current desktop investment. So this virtual desktop host server needs to be bullet proof. What is it going to cost you for hardware and software to make this a fault tolerant server? Remember if this thing goes down everyone is off line. Now consider grouping all your users on one virtual desktop machine. Plus you have the risk of system failure 1 in 8.
This $960 a year also include MS Windows licenses. That works out to about $960/year in hardware costs. Small orgs typically have a 5-6 year replacement program for workstations. If you figure a $600 replacement cost per machine, you have about $4800 in hardware costs for the desktop. I think I would have a few things to consider (just focusing on the desktop without applications). I'm still not convinced desktop visualization is all that great for a small firm.
